Teacher training for the first time on the new flag football field at the Riem Sports Campus
As part of the NFL International Series, not only will visitors in the stadium be offered spectacular professional sport, but the sport of flag football will also be established as a popular sport in Germany in the long term.
To this end, the NFL has been supporting the state capital of Munich with a teacher training course in flag football since the first NFL game was played on German soil in 2022 - and also last year, when Frankfurt was the host venue. This year, the teacher training took place for the first time on the new flag football field in the Riem sports campus. A total of 24 sports teachers took part in the two-day workshop and were trained theoretically and practically in all the basics of flag football. In addition, each teacher received a flag football starter pack so that they could put the new sport into practice directly in their physical education classes. In addition, the teachers receive new units and a playbook every week to make their lessons more varied.
With the program and the new playing field, the Department of Education and Sport (RBS) is sending a clear signal for popular sport. The field is the training ground for the Munich Spatzen, the reigning German flag football champions. In this way, the RBS is promoting a fringe sport that will be an Olympic sport for the first time at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and is providing a unique basis for this sport to develop. Munich is the first major city to invest in this fringe sport.
Sports Mayor Verena Dietl: “All of Munich is looking forward to the second regular season game of the NFL - a highlight for our sports-loving city!” I would particularly like to highlight the flag football program, which, in cooperation with the NFL, is awakening enthusiasm for the sport even in our youngest children.” Sports Officer Florian Kraus: “With the opening of the first flag football field at the Riem Sports Campus, we are sending a strong signal for the promotion of exercise and team spirit. A great step for popular sport in Munich!”
