Timothy Liston: An Experienced Diplomat and Consul in Munich

Since late July 2021, Timothy Liston has served as the U.S. Consul General in Munich. With a distinguished career in the Foreign Service that began in 2002, he brings extensive experience and expertise to Bavaria. Just before his assignment to Munich, he completed a year at the National War College, earning a Master of Science in National Security Strategy. From 2016 to 2020, he served as the Deputy Principal Officer at the U.S. Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Liston’s career has taken him to key positions, including the U.S. Mission to International Organizations in Vienna. From 2013 to 2016, he played a pivotal role as Deputy Counselor, advocating for the peaceful use of nuclear energy and supporting the JCPOA negotiations. His expertise in military and political affairs was further honed during his tenure at the State Department in Washington, D.C., with a focus on Southeast Asia. He has also served in various diplomatic roles in Hanoi, Berlin, and Vilnius, consistently maintaining a keen focus on political and military matters.

Before embarking on his diplomatic career, Timothy Liston gained valuable experience at the RAND Corporation, as a Robert Bosch Foundation Fellow, and as a participant in the Bundestag Internship Program. He holds degrees from Columbia University and the University of Wisconsin in International Relations and German Studies. Additionally, he is fluent in German, Vietnamese, and Lithuanian.
